New balustrading system at Warwick University

A new glass balustrading system manufactured by Essential Projects has been installed at Warwick University as part of a campus redevelopment scheme.

The University is currently embarking on a 5-year period of building works to help supports its ambition of becoming a world-renowned academic institution.

Balustrading Systems for UniversitiesAs part of the plans, the building works feature nine new development projects which include a Faculty of Arts Campus building, a state-of-the-art Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building and the creation of student accommodation for 1000 new students.

Essential Projects was contracted to manufacture a number of the bespoke steel and glass products that were required as part of the redevelopment of Warwick Universities, student accommodation facility; Senate House.

Essential Projects provided metal and glasswork for two areas of the Senate House redevelopment plan.

To comply with health and safety regulations, 14 metres of bespoke satin polished balustrade was installed to an already existing staircase within the building. Essential Projects site fitters also installed 10mm thick, heat-soaked glass panels and 3 metres of 304 grade stainless steel handrails as part of the staircase system.

Due to the fact Senate House is regularly used by visually impaired people, Essential Projects was also asked to manufacture 12m of external steel handrail to a ramp leading to the entrance of the building.

All handrails installed on site were powder coated so they were ‘warm to touch’ to comply with DDA part M building regulations.

Commenting on the projects, Essential Projects, Managing Director, Eliot Saxton said “I am very happy with how the project has gone and the bespoke glass and metalwork we have installed has delivered the brief. Having the Essential Projects name associated with these prestigious educational institutions, proves the we are a trusted contractor, and have the expertise required to provide bespoke metalwork solutions for the education sector.
